INTERVIEW WITH JUAN VALDIVIA
Juan Valdivia, is a prestigious barber in our community, who has more than 30 years of experience in the sector, with his barbershop Juan Valdivia, located in Priego de Córdoba. He is also a Beardburys trainer and specialist in one of the most demanded techniques in the market: beard grooming and shaving.
Today, we talk to him about his career, the secrets of a good shave and how he sees the future of barbering in a world where image and style are more important than ever.
1. How did you get started in barbering?
My beginnings were really whatever was available at the time. At the age of 13, I traveled to Granada to a local barbershop and there I worked as an apprentice for several years. In the old days it wasn't like now, the possibility of training was only in women's hairdressing, and I was a 'novice', simmering the knowledge of classic barbering.
2. How do you define your barbershop?
If I had to define my barbershop, it would be a classic barbershop. Although I really think that the decoration, the atmosphere, the music and so on, reflect a lot the feeling and the idea that I have about the profession of barbering and hairdressing for men.
It is true that we are not afraid to grow and coexist with new trends because it really is a commercial barbershop, a barbershop that at a given moment, as I said before, is not afraid to work in one side of fashion or the other, but if I had to define it with words it would be classic barbershop, a true reflection of the professionals who work there.
3. Do you have any reference you would like to work with in the sector?
Yes, many. There are many colleagues that I admire, and I applaud their work every day because they have a concept of male barbering that I share. There are many references, both known and not so well known, barbers who work quietly every day in their hairdressing salons or barbershops all over Spain and Europe, and when I've traveled I've been able to meet them, and for me they are professionals to admire.
4. What do you think will be the trendy haircut for 2025?
From my point of view, I think the trend this year in men's hairdressing is going to be slightly longer hair, without a doubt.
The fade is not going to disappear, nor will beards, although a little shorter, and the mustache can make an appearance and coexist with longer lengths.
Add color on the other hand. Color has been a big hit in men's hairdressing for some time now and I think it could be a big boom this year.
5. What is the technique or field of barbering that you would like to start trying or learning?
For me a pending task is to grow and acquire knowledge in the world of men's color. No doubt that is the part where I would like to grow a little more this 2025.
6. Essential tool? And product?
A pair of scissors. In my case, I use all Beardburys scissors, the most popular being the 5.5 inch takimura.

7. What are the must-haves for a brand to be included in your barbershop?
A good line of tools and machines, personalized hair treatments, and of course, a good line of shaving and beard products.
8. Where do you see yourself in the future with barbering? What is your long term goal?
That's a good question. I love the day to day of my barbershop, although I don't set limits for myself. I am a person who likes to travel, to know other cultures, other ways of understanding barbering and hairdressing in other countries... I have some pending dream about some way I can approach it.
As a goal, I am open to everything. I love the profession and being in contact with hairdressing and barbering makes me happy. That's my main goal today, to continue to be happy doing what I do.
9. What would you improve in the industry? What is the negative part that barbershop customers don't see?
The integration in the labor sector of all the people who leave the academies. They are well trained, but with little practice and experience, and for me it would be mandatory that at the time of opening their own business, they have some time working as employees in order to develop knowledge and grow as professionals.
The negative part that clients do not see is the hours of work, the physical fatigue and above all the mental fatigue. Many times importance is given to back pain, or leg pain, but I would especially emphasize the psychological fatigue that we professionals bring home.
